turkish embossed metal bath shoes

$300.00

A rare and beautifully preserved pair of antique Ottoman hammam shoes, known as nalin or qabqab, likely crafted in the 19th century. These ceremonial bath clogs feature hand-carved wooden soles entirely sheathed in a tin sheet, chased and repoussé with floral and scroll motifs. They retain their original domed straps and miniature side loops, once adorned with bells to gently chime with movement.

Elevated on block heels and narrow in form, this small pair may have been made for a young woman or for symbolic presentation in a dowry set. Historically worn in Turkish hammams to keep feet elevated above the wet marble floors.

Details:

  • Origin: Ottoman Empire, 19th century (estimate)

  • Materials: Wood base, tin sheeting, handmade nails, remnants of hanging rings

  • Dimensions: 20 cm long × 5.5 cm wide × 7 cm tall (7.9" × 2.2" × 2.75")

  • Condition: Age-appropriate wear; some small missing bells, and natural patina
